This might be the 100th first blog post I've ever done. I like the idea of having somewhere to write consistently, but that's just it...I like the idea. Once I actually write something, I reread it and think I sound dumb. However, this time, I have a good reason to sound dumb - I'm a student writing for a class, KNH 654 to be exact, which is Social Psychological Perspectives of Physical Activity.
The first major project that I want to log here is about being healthy. Dr. Jay has specified that he would like to see writings of past, present, and future physical activity. Because of some of the class readings and my own beliefs, I would rather take a more holistic approach. Instead of limiting my endeavors and subsequent posts to physical activity, I want to officially launch and log my 16-Weeks to Healthy project.
16 weeks may seem pretty obvious to some students, but to other readers, perhaps not so much. 16 weeks is the duration of a semester at Miami University and not just any semester - it's my last semester at Miami University. After six years, I am finally going to leave and never come back to take another class again. Additionally, after five and a half years, I have finally decided to use some of the resources available to me to get fitter, specifically the group fitness courses. I bought my first pass using payroll deduction last week. Here's what I've found so far.
Group fitness is freaking awesome. I've never considered myself much of a social being, but what happens in those classes is mysterious. The only thing that's different from my regular mundane workouts is the people in the classes. For whatever reason, the presence of exhausted, sweaty strangers makes my experience better. Gross, right?
Here's a quick recap of weeks 1 and 2 and then I'm going to go run six miles:
Week 1: Free Week!
Each semester the group fitness classes have free week. Each semester, I would go to free week and be one of those irritating students that crowds the fitness rooms, but never intends to purchase a pass. This week, I wanted to legitimately participate with the intentions of determining whether a fitness pass was right for me. So I participated in about five classes over the course of the week and decided with absolute certainty that this was going to be my semester. I bought a pass the following Tuesday of Week 2.
Week 2: Exhilarating.
While the first week was all fun and games, the second week had a different feel to it. I had spent $160 on an unlimited group fitness class and there were expectations to make it worth the price. I wrote down what classes I intended to attend and I'm proud to say that I attended every single one that I planned! Previously, the only thing I could stick with that well was running. I can plan a running schedule and nail it every day, assuming I am not sick or broken, which has happened a lot in recent years.
Alright, first post done! Time to add some labels and whatnot and keep working!
